The layoffs this year served as a stark reminder that everything is temporary.
Those laid off had immediate financial obligations to face and those who didn’t were left with survivor’s guilt along with fear of it happening to them at some point in the future.
I remember when my mom lost her job when I was early in my career. I remember how dark it got. Some had to do with her fear of maintaining the humble life she had. Still, it mostly had to do with being the safety net for an only child (i.e. me) as I was still incredibly unstable in terms of career (read: unremarkable entry-level office job).
I’m a breakfast person. There is magic to an early morning meal with others that brings a different level of intensity and intimacy to the relationship. The whole experience is romantic in a way. The silence of New York City. Something pure about it all.
